CORVALLIS- Eileen Pollack, an award-winning novelist, short story writer and essayist, will read from her works on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Union 208 at Oregon State University.
Pollack will read from and discuss her latest non-fiction book, "Women Walking Ahead," which traces the life of Catherine Weldon. A widowed Brooklyn artist, Weldon became Sitting Bull's advocate and friend in 1889.
Historians have overlooked Weldon's experiences, which Pollack recaptures in her book. Her story examines the misunderstanding that occurred when a 19th-century woman attempted to build friendships across cultural lines - and compares that to the world in which we live today.
She also wrote a short story collection, "The Rabbi in the Attic," and a novel, "Paradise New York."
Pollack teaches in the creative writing master's program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She was awarded two Pushcart prizes, a Rona Jaffe Foundation Award for literary non-fiction, a fiction fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Michener Fellowship from the University of Iowa.
After Pollack's reading, books will be available for sale and signing by the author. Her presentation is part of the 2002-03 OSU Visiting Writers Series. It is jointly sponsored by the OSU Department of English, the Valley Library, the office of the Provost and the University Honors College.
