CORVALLIS - Jill Pauls, a virtuoso flutist, will be featured in the May 22 Spring Concert of the Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at LaSells Stewart Center on the Oregon State University campus.

Pauls is principal flute of the orchestra. She is also a member of the Eugene Symphony Orchestra and last year served as interim principal flutist. At the May 22 concert, she will perform the "Concerto for Flute," composed in 1934 by Jacques Ibert. The piece is considered one of the most difficult flute concertos ever written, yet it "it is in the light, charming and witty style that characterizes the works of Ibert and many other 20th century French composers," said music director Marlan Carlson.

Opening the program will be Rossini's overture, "Semiramide." Rossini wrote the entire opera in only 27 days, Carlson pointed out, so it is likely that "this popular little cream puff" was written in a matter of hours.

Concluding the program is one of Bela Bartok's most popular symphonic works, the "Concerto for Orchestra." Composed on a commission from Serge Koussevitsky and the Boston Symphony in 1944, the concerto has come to be "generally recognized as one of the three or four greatest symphonic masterpieces of the 20th century." Written in five movements, the concerto explores virtually the entire palette of orchestral colors and technical devices.

Tickets are $15 for adults. Admission for high school and college students is free with ID. Younger students are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
