CORVALLIS - Two Oregon State University choirs and a Corvallis choir will combine to offer a concert on Friday, May 31.
The OSU Meistersingers and Bella Voce will be joined by Jubilate!, a women's choir in Corvallis, for this year's Spring Sing! The event begins at 7:30 p.m at the First Presbyterian Church, 8th Street and Monroe Avenue in Corvallis.
The OSU Meistersingers are a 60-voice men's chorus under the direction of Steven Zielke, the director of choral activities at OSU. Bella Voce - which translates as "beautiful voice" - is a 70-member women's chorus under the direction of Tina Bull, OSU coordinator of music education. Both choirs consist of students representing a variety of academic disciplines from throughout the campus, but hold in common an enjoyment of singing and an interest in sharing their singing with others.
Jubilate! is a 40-voice community choir conducted by Betty Busch, who was recently honored with the OSU Women's Center's 2002 Women of Extraordinary Achievement Award.
The evening will include a diversity of music, and will open with all three choirs combining to perform Stephen Leek's "Tunggare," a single Australian aboriginal word meaning "to sing" or "voice." Bella Voce will perform Gustav Holst's "Ave Maria" as well as the sea chantey, "Away from the Roll of the Sea" and the spiritual "Wade in the Water."
Jubilate! will join Bella Voce for Gwyneth Walker's "I thank you God," and will also perform works including "Kasar mie la gaji (based on an African language phrase meaning "the Earth is tired") and Gwyneth Walker's "How Can I Keep From Singing?"
The OSU Meistersingers will perform such selections as the "Soldiers Chorus" from Gounod's "Faust" and "Spaseniye sodelal" (Salvation is Created) by Pavel Chesnolkov. They will also perform the spiritual "Climbin' Up the Mountain" and "OSU Medley," a selection of Beaver college songs culminating with the OSU Fight Song.
Admission to the concert is $5 at the door; OSU students are admitted free with ID.
