CORVALLIS - Registration is now available for a wide range of educational summer programs for middle school and high school students, offering them a chance to study everything from careers in medicine to the magic of theater through the Mid-Willamette Valley Saturday Academy.
The program is hosted by Oregon State University, and complete information about classes, registration and fees can be found at the web address http://oregonstate.edu/precollege/academy, or by calling 541-737-8139. Most classes are small, hands-on programs that provide learning opportunities in science, mathematics and technology.
One special feature this year is a series of four computer workshops in late July for middle school students, which can be taken individually or as a group. The series covers computer basics, web page and Internet searches, multimedia presentations, and animation.
Other middle school programs include building robots, acting and theater, building and flying model planes, money management, realistic drawing, algebra preparation and the zoology of salamanders. High school classes include DNA analysis, careers in medicine, a hospital tour and an archaeological dig.
Young women and minorities, groups that are traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering, may be interested in a special program designed for them by two engineering departments at OSU. They will spend a week with a research group in either chemical or biological engineering, live in university housing, take field trips and do other activities. This program is designed for students in grades 9-11.
