CORVALLIS - An Oregon State University doctoral candidate in the history of science has been invited to participate in 10-day policy colloquium in Washington, D.C., this summer sponsored by the American Meteorological Society.

Kristine C. Harper is the lone historian of science selected for the 2002 AMS Summer Policy Colloquium, which has drawn a selected group of scientists, policy-makers, business executives, scholars and journalists to discuss decision-making processes in atmospheric sciences.

Speakers appearing at the colloquium, which begins in early June, include John H. Marburger, science adviser to President Bush; James R. Mahoney, Assistant Secretary of Commerce; Larry Grossman, former president of NBC News; Daniel S. Greenberg, a noted science journalist, and others.

Topics addressed at the conference will include the global climate observing system and the emerging role of the private sector in atmospheric policy.

A former meteorologist for the U.S. Navy, Harper has a master's degree in meteorology and oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of California. She received the 2001 Graduate Fellowship in the History of Science from the American Meteorological Society for her dissertation, which examines the rise of numerical weather forecasting after World War II.
