McMINNVILLE - Communicating effectively with elected officials is the focus of "Influencing the Decision-Makers: Practical and Proven Ways to Affect Public Policy," an informational and skill building workshop scheduled June 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem.

The workshop is sponsored by the Oregon State University Extension Service Family Community Leadership program and will feature presentations by current and former elected government officials, state administrators, lobbyists and political consultants.

"This workshop is intended for citizens who want to improve their ability to communicate with legislators and other public officials," said Roger Bairstow, co-chair of the event, and family and community development agent in the Yamhill County office of the OSU Extension Service. "The workshop agenda will allow time to explore topics, answer participant questions and apply skills discussed."

"Public officials can only serve the needs and interests of their constituents if the constituents can effectively make those interests known," added Dianne Mekkers, west Salem resident and member of the workshop planning committee.

During the afternoon session participants will practice effective advocacy skills by writing to a government official, drafting testimony for a government committee or learning citizen-lobbying techniques.

The OSU Extension Service Family Community Leadership program enables volunteers to provide leadership skills to Oregon citizens in civic, community and other non-profit organizations. In partnership with the OSU Extension Service, FCL volunteers work with local groups to improve their effectiveness and help them become more action oriented.
