CORVALLIS - Douglas Maguire has been appointed the Edmund Hayes Professor of Silviculture in the Department of Forest Science at Oregon State University, a position in which he will do research on innovative silvicultural systems that provide alternatives to intensive plantation management for small private woodland owners.

This endowed professorship was made possible by a donation from the Hayes family in memory of their father, who was an advocate for education and silviculture.

Maguire, an associate professor of silviculture and biometrics in the OSU Department of Forest Resources since 1996, received his doctorate in forest biometrics from OSU in 1986. He has also held academic positions at the University of Maine and University of Washington.

Areas of Maguire's research include forest crown structure and dynamics, natural regeneration processes, understory vegetation dynamics, stand responses to intermediate treatments such as thinning, and other issues.
