CORVALLIS - The "pasture calendar," a new concept for managing hayfields and pastures, is the focus of a workshop scheduled March 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cottage Grove Community Center.
Sponsored by the Oregon State University Extension Service, the meeting is open to the public and is aimed at hay and forage producers in western Oregon.
This workshop will offer a summary of forage research conducted over the past 10 years in western Oregon and western Washington, said Gene Pirelli, OSU Extension Service district livestock and forage agent and co-organizer of the meeting.
Workshop presenters are Marty Chaney, pasture specialist, Washington Natural Resource Conservation Service; Steve Fransen, Washington State University Extension agronomist; Larry Brewer, pasture specialist, Oregon Natural Resource Conservation Service, and Pirelli.
Topics to be covered at the meeting include growing forages in western Oregon and Washington, what a forage calendar is and how to use it, and how a pasture calendar can help improve forage and livestock production.
Presenters will also give an example of how to use a forage calendar for livestock grazing in the Willamette Valley and on the Oregon coast. The cost of the workshop is $30, which includes break refreshments, lunch, and workshop handouts. You may register at the door, but pre-registration is required if you want to order a lunch.
The Cottage Grove Community Center is located at 700 Gibbs Street, Cottage Grove.
