CORVALLIS - The U.S. Geological Survey has promoted Carl B. Schreck, a professor in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University, to senior scientist.
Studying the environmental and reproductive physiology of fish, Schreck and his colleagues focus on determining the effects of stress on fish in the wild and in hatcheries. Recent studies include the evaluation of Columbia River fishery management programs such as fish passage, stock assessment, contaminants, hatchery management and conservation of endangered fish, particularly salmon.
His studies take him in the field as well as the laboratory. His work encompasses a broad range of disciplines, including genetics, physiology, fish behavior in relation to environmental stressors and developmental biology.
Schreck is the unit leader of the Oregon Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, a joint venture of the U.S. Geological Survey, Oregon State University, and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. He has been in the fisheries and wildlife faculty at OSU since 1975. He received his Ph.D. from Colorado State University in physiology and fish biology in 1972.
