CORVALLIS - James D. White, a distinguished professor of chemistry at Oregon State University, has received an Arthur C. Cope Senior Scholar Award for 2003 from the American Chemical Society.

This prestigious award, which recognizes excellence in organic chemistry, includes an honorarium of $5,000 and a $40,000 unrestricted research grant to be assigned by the recipient. It will be presented to White at the 226th annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in New York City in September, 2003.

White was nominated for the award in recognition of his work on the synthesis and structural elucidation of natural products, such as terpenes, alkaloids, macrolides, marine metabolites and several other classes of naturally occurring substances. This work has yielded more than 200 professional publications.

In a 30-year career at OSU, White has also trained nearly 60 graduate students and more than 80 postdoctoral researchers, served on the editorial boards of several professional chemistry journals, and received numerous other career honors and awards. White received his doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965 and has been on the OSU faculty since 1971.
