CORVALLIS - More than 30 campus and community groups will help observe Earth Week at Oregon State University starting on Earth Day - Monday, April 22.

"We believe that the university community - made up of students, staff and faculty - is representative of the kinds of diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds needed to address an equally varied range of problems facing our environment today," said Justin Fleming, OSU coordinator.

Campus and community organizations will assemble in the OSU Memorial Union Quad from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 22 to paint a current picture of environmental affairs and to provide opportunities for people to become involved in projects to aid the environment. Exhibits will continue through Friday, April 26, Fleming said.

Oregon State's Earth Week celebration is part of the worldwide observance of Earth Day each April 22. The first Earth Day in 1970 rallied more than 20 million Americans from around the country to environmental issues. The event spread globally and on the 20th anniversary in 1990, more than 200 million people in 141 countries participated in environmental activities.

Local participants in the OSU observation include: Associated Students of OSU Environmental Affairs Task Force; the Center for Water and Environmental Sustainability; OSU Campus Recycling; OSU Conservation Committee; OSU Consumers Anonymous; OSU Motor Pool; OSU Native American Longhouse; OSU Organic Growers Club; OSU Outdoor Recreation Center; OSU Riverwatch; OSU Surplus Property; OSU Vegetarian Resource Network; Spring Creek Project and the Undergraduate Green Design Research.
