CORVALLIS - Oregon State University will host its 26th annual Gerontology Conference, "New Collaborations," April 16-17 at the CH2M-HILL Alumni Center.

The conference is co-sponsored by OSU Extension Family and Community Development, Program on Gerontology and the Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments. Gerontology professionals, policy makers, care providers, students and individuals interested in gerontology issues are invited to attend.

More than 40 different workshops will be offered during the two-day conference, including sessions on clinical practice, advocacy, social issues, alternative therapies, workforce enhancement, adult foster care provision and family care issues.

A one-day "Advocacy in Action" workshop will be held on Tuesday, April 16, with Janice Jackson, director of the Center for Aging Policy in Washington, D.C.

The first day of the conference will feature speakers Jackson and Lydia Lissman. Jackson will speak about the contribution of America's families to the quality of life across the generations. Lissman, assistant director of the Department of Human Services, Seniors and People with Disabilities in Oregon, will address the state's reorganization of the Department of Human Services.

Lissman will also discuss how budget shortfalls will affect services to older adults and key initiatives for this year.

Scheduled to speak April 17 is Stephen Cutler from the University of Vermont. Cutler, a nationally known gerontologist, will address everyday cognitive functioning and personal concerns about the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Oregon Health Sciences University has approved this year's conference for 14 hours of continuing education credit. Certificates of attendance will be available.

The registration fee for the conference is $125, including luncheon and refreshments on both days. Student and single-day registration options are also available.
