CORVALLIS - The 15th annual Pet Day and Open House, a popular family event featuring everything from dog washes to a petting zoo and teddy bear surgery, will be held Saturday, May 4, at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University.
More than 2,000 area residents attended Pet Day last year. The event is free and open to the public, although some activities charge small fees. It will be held rain or shine, in and around Magruder Hall on the OSU Campus, which is at 30th and Washington Street. Parking at Reser Stadium is free, and pets are welcome, on a leash.
The day begins with a "Fun Run" at 9 a.m., and most other events will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Pet Day is designed to celebrate the human-animal bond and help inform the public about the programs of education, research and public service operated by OSU's College of Veterinary Medicine. Tours of Magruder Hall and the Veterinary Teaching Hospital will be available.
Among the numerous activities, demonstrations and booths are the first annual cat show, Koenig's Llamas, Brad's World Reptile Educational Display, Border Collie International Performing Team, community Frisbee contest, pet wash, Best Friends Obedience and Agility, a petting zoo, pet photographs, wagon rides, hay scramble, teddy bear surgery, face painting and Hennigan's Spinning Frisbee K-9s.
There are also demonstrations of dressage, Northwest law dogs, and dog therapy. An "Ask A Vet" service will enable people to get professional advice about their pets, and carriage rides will be available to the Memorial Union quad. Several food booths will also be available with pizza, pastries, tacos, baked goods and other foods.
More information, event times, and other details can be found at the Pet Day web site, at www.vet.orst.edu/PETDAY/2002/index.htm.
