CORVALLIS - Oregon State University is hosting a lecture and film focusing on women forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military during World War II.

Free and open to the public, the two-hour event starts at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in OSU's Gilfillan Auditorium. The featured speaker is Professor Michiko Nakahara from Japan's Waseda University, an expert in Southeast Asian history.

Nakahara will talk about the historical background of the Women's International War Crimes Tribunal held last winter in Tokyo. The tribunal investigated the military's role in the enslavement of women.

In addition to the lecture, the documentary film "Report of the Women's International War Crimes Tribunal," will be shown. The film includes testimony of survivors from North and South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan and other regions.

The event is sponsored by OSU's Difference, Power and Discrimination Program; the School of Education; Ethnic Studies, Political Science; Program for Ethics, Science and the Environment; Women Studies; International Language and Literature; The Asian Cultural Center; The Feminist Coalition; and the Women's Center.
