CORVALLIS - An Oregon State University professor has received the Arthur S. Einarsen Award from the Northwest Section of The Wildlife Society.

John Crawford, a professor of fisheries and wildlife at OSU, has been actively involved in the society for nearly 30 years. He has helped build one of the strongest upland game bird research programs in the western United States, and made significant contributions to the understanding of the ecology and management of many species.

Crawford has published more than 80 articles in refereed journals, written numerous reports for wildlife agencies and task forces, and presented more than 40 papers at professional conferences. His work on the sage grouse helped focus attention on the declining numbers of the game bird, resulting in better conservation and management techniques.

In addition to teaching literally thousands of undergraduate students at OSU, Crawford has directed the programs of 37 master's students and seven Ph.D. candidates.

He has served as editor for The Wildlife Society Bulletin and was associate editor for the Journal of Wildlife Management.
