CORVALLIS - Donald Reed, a distinguished professor of biochemistry at Oregon State University, has received the Merit Award from the Society of Toxicology, which each year recognizes a single individual for their career accomplishments in toxicology.

This professional organization honored Reed for his research in biological oxidations, glutathione metabolism, oxygen free radicals, the mechanism of toxicity of alkylating agents, the role of cellular antioxidants and other research, educational and professional accomplishments.

Reed "has been recognized around the world for his research," the organization said, and "his career has been a stellar one at all levels."

Reed for many years directed the Environmental Health Sciences Center at OSU. He was the initial director of the Linus Pauling Institute, and also is past president of the Society of Toxicology. He received his doctorate from OSU in 1957.
