CORVALLIS - The Oregon chapter of the Wildlife Society has given its annual award to Robert Jarvis, a professor of fisheries and wildlife at Oregon State University.

Jarvis, a leader in Oregon wildlife conservation for more than 30 years, was cited for his work as a researcher, educator and colleague. He has worked with other professionals from numerous agencies throughout his career, including the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Forest Service.

An expert in the biology and ecology of birds, Jarvis has passed much of his knowledge along to his students. He has advised 28 master's and 12 doctoral students, many of whom are leaders in the wildlife field throughout the country. Their areas of study have included Canada geese, mallards, wetland invertebrates, band-tailed pigeons, harlequin ducks and other animals.

Jarvis recently developed a new distance learning course, "Biology of Birds," that is based on video lessons and supported by the web.

"His students routinely give him high praise for the sincerity and effort he gives to their learning - especially their writing," said W. Daniel Edge, head of the OSU Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. "Almost every wildlife graduate from OSU in the last generation has been touched by his mentoring." Jarvis has been on the OSU faculty since 1971.
