CORVALLIS - Two perennial problems for Northwest buildings, mold and moisture, will be the focus of a workshop hosted by the Oregon State University Extension Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on March 15 at the Monarch Hotel in Portland.

The workshop, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will feature nationally known mold experts Harriet Ammann of the Washington State Department of Health and McGregor "Mac" Pearce, a microbiological consultant.

The session will be geared for people who work with homes, schools or other buildings and are concerned about indoor air quality in these buildings. These may include school nurses, architects, weatherization contractors, building managers and operators, school business officials and risk managers, health department personnel, home inspectors, asthma outreach workers, HVAC practitioners, environmental consultants and interested citizens, according to Cathy Nuno, a staff member with the OSU Extension Energy Program.

Participants will learn about the health effects of mold, how to identify and correct conditions promoting mold growth in buildings, and how to use practical and safe approaches in building assessment, mold measurement and mold remediation.

Pre-registration is required. Registration before March 8, 2001 is $35. After that date, the cost will be $40. Lunch is included in the fee.
