CORVALLIS - Balz Frei, professor and head of the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, has been elected president of the Oxygen Society for a term that will begin in 2002.
This group, which was established in 1987, is a professional organization of more than 1,100 scientists and clinicians with an interest in the field of free radical biology, chemistry and medicine.
Research in this area is expanding rapidly, often to explore the free radical-induced oxidative stress that is related to heart disease, certain types of cancer and various neurodegenerative diseases.
Frei, who received his doctorate in biochemistry from ETH Zurich in 1986, is an internationally recognized expert in the role of oxidative stress in atherosclerosis and other diseases.
