CORVALLIS - Bob Cain, a retired professor of food science and technology at Oregon State University and long-time member of the Institute of Food Technologies, has won two prestigious awards.

The 83-year-old Cain received the Career Achievement Award from the Northwest Food Processors Association and the Henry Hartman Cup, given by the Oregon Horticultural Society in recognition of outstanding service to Oregon horticulture.

He is the first-ever recipient of both awards in one year.

Cain's many professional achievements include the discovery in the mid-1950s of a radiation-resistant microorganism. The work has been cited as a beginning point for the creation of genetically altered bacteria that could be used to fight nuclear waste.
