CORVALLIS - The 1999 Starker Lectures at Oregon State University will feature several speakers in October and November discussing the topic "Natural Resources in a Material World." Each lecture will be on a Thursday from 4-5 p.m. in Peavy Hall Room 130, on the OSU campus. The Starker lectures are sponsored by the OSU College of Forestry, and are free and open to the public.

Speakers include:

• Oct. 28: Dan Kemmis, director of the Center for the Rocky Mountain West at the University of Montana, former mayor of Missoula, Mont., and author of "Community and the Politics of Place," a book that outlines how the function of communities and the quality of public life could be improved.

   

• Nov. 4: Ted Strong, former executive director of the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, who has criticized the role of science in salmon recovery. He wrote: "Perhaps what saddens me most is that salmon restoration is mostly an illusion, a tangled morass of processes that, in the final analysis, protect the groups who have a vested interest in keeping things the way they are."

   

• Nov. 18: Nancy Langston, assistant professor of forest ecology and management at the University of Wisconsin, award-winning author and forest historian who has called western forests an "ecological nightmare," speaking on "Human and Environmental History in Old Growth Forests."
