CORVALLIS - Darci Boak of Sutherlin is the 1999 recipient of the $6,000 Leo G. Spitzbart Memorial Scholarship for her work in 4-H and participation in the Oregon State Fair.

The Spitzbart scholarship honors the late Leo Spitzbart, manager of the Oregon State Fair from 1935 to 1957. The award is given to an outstanding 4-H member who has participated in the fair and who plans to attend OSU, according to Duane Johnson, Oregon State University Extension 4-H youth development specialist.

Boak, daughter of Robert and Donna Boak, is a senior at Sutherlin High School and has been a 4-H member for nine years. She worked in the 4-H Fiber Arts and Food section at the state fair, a responsibility that included setting up the display area, receiving and displaying exhibits, and clerking for the fiber arts judges.

Among her many community service activities, Boak participated in community clean-up projects and performed ballet at nursing homes. In 1997, she was one of five Douglas County residents to receive a citizenship award from the Lions Club.

In addition to her involvement with 4-H sewing and fashion activities, Boak has been a teen leader of a 4-H expressive arts club and a participant in OSU's 4-H Summer Days. In 1998, she was selected as a 4-H Ambassador and attended the National 4-H Youth Congress in Atlanta, Georgia.

Boak has been a member of the Sutherlin High School speech team for three years and is a member of the school yearbook staff. She was the first student selected to pilot test Sutherlin High School's internship program. She interned at the Sandpiper Restaurant in Roseburg.

Boak plans to study interior design at OSU.
