CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Department of Music will sponsor three pre-college music programs this summer.
Each of these is a residential program designed to give young musicians an opportunity to develop their skills as well as experience a breadth of activities and recreation on campus. This is the music department's eighth year offering summer music programs for young people.
"The Singer and The Stage," for high school vocalists (July 11-16), and "SummerSing," for middle school singers (July 18-23), are both directed by Judy Krueger. The OSU Drumline and Color Guard Camp (July 29-31) is directed by Lewis Norfleet.
Complete information on all three camps is available at the Department of Music, 541-737-4061.
Music director for "The Singer and The Stage" is Richard Poppino, OSU director of vocal activities, assisted by OSU voice faculty members Jill Soltero and Maggie Daane. Lisa Berkson Platt, of Opera Theater Corvallis, will teach stage movement and dramatic interpretation. Students should be entering grades 10, 11 or 12, and will be coached on musical theater repertoire that they have selected.
An ensemble number from "Phantom of the Opera" will provide an opportunity for group stage movement. A public performance closes the camp at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 16, at the First United Methodist Church. Full residential tuition is $400, with a commuter option of $325.
Returning as music director for "SummerSing '99" is Tina Scott, OSU director of music education. Other conductors for this choral camp for students entering grades 7-9 are Gary Frame, director of the popular OSU Black Tie Ensemble, and Isaiah Jones, director of the Inner Strength Gospel Choir. The final choral performance will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 23, also at the Methodist Church. Full residential tuition is $325, with a commuter option of $275.
The new "Drumline and Color Guard Camp" is a three-day residential program for high school color guard and marching percussion students. In addition to Norfleet, who is OSU athletic band director, the staff includes Alan Keown, marching percussion specialist; Matt Savage of the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps of Ohio; Jodi Leeker, OSU colorguard specialist; and Jurt Jull from the Everybody Winter Guard. Both groups will present concluding outdoor performances on July 31. Full residential tuition is $125.
