CORVALLIS - Bart Thielges, associate dean of the College of Forestry at Oregon State University since 1990, has been named interim dean of the college. The appointment is effective Sept. 1.

He replaces George Brown, who retired as dean June 30.

The search for a new dean is continuing, according to Roy Arnold, OSU provost and executive vice president. A search committee is reviewing nominations and applications.

Thielges, who also serves as associate director of the Forest Research Laboratory at Oregon State, came to OSU from the University of Kentucky. He spent 13 years there as professor and chairman of the Department of Forestry, including one year as a visiting professor at Oxford University in England.

He has held faculty positions at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center and at Louisiana State University. Thielges also worked as principal research scientist and project leader for the U.S. Forest Service.

His research interests include host-pathogen co-evolution and the selection and breeding of trees for disease and insect resistance. He is the author or co-author of more than 60 scientific publications in those areas, and has served as a research panelist and reviewer for several federal agencies.

Thielges has taught courses in forest ecology, forest genetics and tree improvement, tree physiology and reforestation. He has worked on several international projects in forestry.
