CORVALLIS - The life of Linus Pauling, noted scientist, humanist and the only person to have won two unshared Nobel prizes, will be discussed Wednesday, Feb. 10 at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center on the campus of Oregon State University.

Karyle Butcher, the Donald and Delpha Campbell University Librarian at OSU and the 1998 Oregon Librarian of the Year, will present an overview of Pauling's extraordinary life, the programs that carry on some of his work, and public access to the Linus and Ava Helen Pauling papers and memorabilia at OSU's The Valley Library.

The event will begin with a buffet lunch at 11:30 a.m. followed by Butcher's presentation at 12:15 p.m. Cost for the lunch is $10 per person or $8 for OSU Alumni Association members. Persons not wanting lunch can come for the presentation only. There is no charge for the presentation. Pauling, an OSU graduate, presented OSU with his papers and those of his late wife, Ava Helen Pauling, in the spring of 1986. The collection includes all of the Paulings' personal and scientific papers, notebooks and correspondence dating back to 1916. There are nearly 500,000 items in the collection, which is considered one of the most important scientific archives of an individual this century.

Following the presentation, the public will have a chance to tour The Valley Library Special Collections and see some of Paulings' papers and memorabilia.

The presentation is a joint program of the OSU Alumni Association and OSU Portland Center. It marks the first time that the popular OSU Over Lunch program has been offered in Portland and Corvallis.
