CORVALLIS - "Preparing for the 21st Century," a day-long Oregon State University conference aimed at giving people the skills and know-how to compete in the global economy, will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13, in the OSU Memorial Union.

While the conference is aimed primarily at African-American undergraduate and graduate students, it is open to all. The conference, which costs $4, is sponsored by the OSU Black Graduate Student Association, the Black Student Union and the Ujima Education Office. "The seminar focuses on educating students on making the transition from school to work - from one community to next," said Louan Johnson, program coordinator in OSU Admission and Orientation.

Topics include business etiquette, professional transitions, career planning for undergraduate and graduate students, preparing for jobs and internships, and diversity and difference at work and school.

Other strategies and life skills issues addressed will be developing computer skills, the importance of professional conferences and enhancing skills such as communication and interview techniques, Johnson said.
