CORVALLIS - Doris Kearns Goodwin, a presidential historian, political commentator and baseball fan, will give a lecture at Oregon State University on Tuesday, March 2. The lecture, which begins at 7:30 p.m., in LaSells Stewart Center, is free and open to the public.

Goodwin's appearance is sponsored by the OSU Convocations and Lectures Committee. It will be interpreted for the hearing impaired.

Goodwin is the author of books about the presidencies of Lyndon Johnson, John Kennedy and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize in History for "No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt -The Homefront in World War II."

Her book, "The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys: An American Saga," was transformed into a six-hour mini-series shown on ABC television in 1990.

Goodwin is also a baseball expert. In her most recent book, "Wait Till Next Year," Goodwin recounts her childhood on Long Island in the 1950s and her love of the Brooklyn Dodgers. She has written many articles on baseball and was a consultant for Ken Burns' acclaimed documentary, "The History of Baseball."

She also appears regularly on the Jim Lehrer News Hour on PBS and has appeared on many other television news programs.

Goodwin graduated from Colby College in 1964, was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in 1966, and completed her doctorate at Harvard University in 1968. While in graduate school, she served as a White House Fellow and eventually became a staff assistant to President Lyndon Johnson. She later helped him prepare his memoirs.

Goodwin taught government at Harvard University for 10 years, including a course on the American presidency.
