CORVALLIS - Oregon State University will host a three-week summer workshop of accelerated art instruction for teens this summer that is drawing interest from students all over the West Coast.

This will be the fifth year the OSU Department of Art has hosted Jumpstart. The pre-college visual arts workshop offers students ages 15-18 advanced study in traditional art forms, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and printmaking, and non-traditional fields, such as design structures, digital photography, graphic design, illustration and video.

New this year are special courses for return students in web design and advanced mixed-media painting.

In addition to spending six hours in studio classes each day, students participate in seminars on dance, music and theater, and attend lectures by visiting professional artists and designers. Each student will produce a portfolio of work during the three weeks, that will be reviewed and exhibited.

At the awards ceremony, the OSU Department of Art will award two Jumpstart students full scholarships to Oregon State. Last year's recipients were Carolyn Funk of Lake Oswego, and Chris Pangle, Bend.

The workshop has grown in size and reputation each year and is supported by the Coca-Cola Foundation. The foundation and the OSU Department of Art co-sponsor workshop scholarships called the Coca-Cola Gold Ribbon Awards.

"The awards will permit talented students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds to attend the program," said Jim Folts, chair of OSU's art department.

Jumpstart will run from June 20 to July 9 at OSU. The summer program will includes trips to the Portland Art Museum where the students will become teachers, assisting children attending a family day event at the "Down from the Shimmering Skies" exhibit.

Visiting artists at this year's program include independent filmmaker Todd Korgan, painter Lucinda Parker, Polish glass artist Anna Skibska, and dancer Keith Goodman. Tuition for Jumpstart is $1,295 for students who stay on campus for the three weeks; $795 for those who commute locally.
