CORVALLIS - One of the world's most distinguished environmentalists and an adviser to presidents and prime ministers will outline how we can solve our global environmental crisis during the 1998 Condon Lecture at Oregon State University.

Norman Myers, a professor from Oxford University, will present "Our Environmental Predicament: Time of Breakdown or Breakthrough?" on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 8 p.m. in the LaSells Stewart Center on the OSU campus. It is free and open to the public.

Myers advises a positive approach to solving environmental problems, such as eliminating subsidies that thwart a market economy, pushing back the deserts, replanting the forests, stemming acid rain, reversing ozone-layer depletion, and restoring topsoil.

He is a foreign member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences who has received the United Nations Environment Prize and the Volvo Environment Prize. This year Queen Elizabeth named him to the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) "for services to the global environment."

The Condon Lectureship was established to honor Thomas Condon, a pioneer in Oregon geology. Its purpose is to help interpret the results of significant scientific research for nonspecialists.
