CORVALLIS - How much do we really know about the effects of livestock on fish habitat, riparian zones and streams?

The Oregon State University Extension Service publication "Livestock Influences on Riparian Zones and Fish Habitat, A Bibliography,"offers readers the opportunity to conduct a thorough examination of that question. It presents an exhaustive listing in database form of written materials that address the topic of livestock impacts on streams and fish.

The publication includes the bibliographic database on floppy disk for DOS and Windows-based personal computers. The database is provided in Pro-Cite and Papyrus software formats.

The bibliography is intended for anyone interested in learning more about grazing impacts on streams, but it would be particularly useful to land managers wanting to develop effective management strategies for stream systems, said Bill Krueger, co-author and head of the OSU Department of Rangeland Resources.

The purpose of the review, Krueger added, is to determine the state of the knowledge base and to evaluate the quality of the literature on influences of livestock on fish habitat, riparian zones and streams.

The bibliography consists of 1,521 entries that are articles or books categorized as literature containing original data, literature classified as commentary, or literature that describes methods, classification systems or policies. Each entry includes title, author, date of publication and a brief description.

According to Krueger, most of the references are available in land grant university libraries and can be obtained through interlibrary loan programs. The literature in the bibliography was identified using existing bibliographies, computer literature searches, and routine library research.
