"Five Women Wearing the Same Dress" was first produced in New York in 1993 and called a "fresh-as-a-daisy comedy, funny as can be" by the New York Daily News. Racy humor and adult language are used in the production, which centers on five bridesmaids on a hot summer afternoon in Tennessee escaping the reception honoring a bride, whom all five are trying to avoid.
The lead characters include the cynical career woman Trisha (Renee Sher) who was a college friend of the bride; Meredith (Juliet Miller), the troubled sister of the bride; her deeply religious cousin Frances (Sandra Shockley); Mindy (Kristin Whitson), the outspoken sister of the groom; and Georgeanne (Stacie Reichmuth), the bride's one-time high school sidekick. As the afternoon wears on the five very different women discover a common bond in a funny and irreverant celebration of the women's spirit.
