CORVALLIS - Donald F. Parker, dean of the College of Business at Oregon State University, has been elected president of Beta Gamma Sigma, the national honor society for business programs accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.

The society, which has 400,000 members worldwide, seeks to encourage and honor academic achievement and excellence in the study and practice of business.

Parker has served as vice president of the organization for two years, helping the society expand its Outstanding Chapter Program and establish the Business Achievement Award.

He has been a member of the society's Board of Governors since 1994 and helped the organization increase scholarships to student members.

The Sara Hart Kimball Dean of Business at OSU, Parker has been with the university since 1991. He previously was dean of the College of Commerce and Industry at the University of Wyoming, and served on the faculty of the University of Michigan and the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1980, achieving the rank of captain. He has a Ph.D. in human resource management from Cornell University, a master's in personnel administration from George Washington University and a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Oklahoma.

Parker will serve as president of Beta Gamma Sigma through June 30, 2000.
