CORVALLIS - Graduate school applications are now being accepted at Oregon State University for new graduate degree programs in environmental sciences.

A master of arts, master of science and doctoral program are now available in this multidisciplinary program, which was approved in January and will include participation by every OSU college. It is OSU's contribution to the Joint-Campus Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences, Studies and Policy that also involves the University of Oregon and Portland State University.

"With these new programs Oregon is clearly ahead of much of the country in responding to the demand for more graduate level training in environmental science," said Bill Winner, a professor of botany and director of the program. "This goes straight to the heart of OSU's historic strengths, and every graduate program in this area will combine elements of life, physical and social sciences."

Increasing environmental problems around the world, new government programs and growing concerns by the public and private industry about environmental protection have led to many new employment and career possibilities in these fields, Winner said.

OSU's programs will allow a focus in one of four areas: ecology, biogeochemistry, social science, or environmental mathematics and analysis. Both graduate students and additional OSU faculty to work in this area are now being recruited, Winner said. Students may begin their graduate programs immediately and a variety of new course offerings should be available by fall term, 1998.
