CORVALLIS - More than 200 Oregon State University students have been awarded a combined total of $461,877 in private awards from the Oregon State Scholarship Commission.

The number of recipients, and total dollars, was the highest of any college or university - public or private - in Oregon.

Next on the list was the University of Oregon, $270,253 for 141 students; followed by University of Portland, $215,814 for 72 students; and Willamette University, $209,340 for 73 students.

In all, 700 students from 35 Oregon colleges and universities received a total of nearly $2.6 million in private awards through the commission.

The scholarships awarded are need-based scholarships awarded primarily to Oregon residents, according to Keith McCreight, director of financial aid at Oregon State University.

"OSU has the highest enrollment of in-state students of any Oregon school, which is one reason we fare so well," McCreight said. "Our students also have, on average, the highest grade point average of students entering the Oregon State System of Higher Education, which makes them highly competitive for scholarships."

The top 10 Oregon schools in dollars received through the commission:

1) Oregon State University: 206 recipients, $461,877

2) University of Oregon: 141 recipients, $270,253

3) University of Portland: 72 recipients, $215,814

4) Willamette University: 73 recipients, $209,340

5) Linfield College: 52 recipients, $142,048

6) George Fox University: 51 recipients, $134,774

7) Oregon Health Sciences University: 33 recipients, $129,701

8) Lewis and Clark College: 33 recipients, $127,851

9) Portland State University: 50 recipients, $126,583

10) Southern Oregon State University: 31 recipients, $107,889
