CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Press has published a bibliography of literature about birds that features articles and stories written more than 60 years ago.

The book, "An Annotated Bibliography of Oregon Bird Literature Published Before 1935," will never make the best-seller list, press officials acknowledge, but it has been eagerly embraced by the birding community.

"This exhaustive, richly annotated bibliography fills an important gap in Oregon bird literature and offers a valuable new resource for professional and informed amateur ornithologists," said Tom Booth, marketing manager for the OSU Press.

Written by George Jobanek, the bibliography has references organized both by author and species, as well as by county and key words. There are, for example, 86 entries for the sage grouse, and 220 entries for Klamath County.

Jobanek, a Eugene-based writer and ornithologist, researched early ornithological, scientific and natural history publications of Oregon birds. Most of these early articles have rarely been seen by contemporary readers and many have been overlooked in previous bibliographies, Booth said. There are nearly 2,000 entries.

Only 600 copies of "An Annotated Bibliography of Oregon Bird Literature Published Before 1935" were printed. The hardcover book is available at book stores and libraries and can be purchased for $45 plus shipping and handling. For more information, contact the OSU Press at 541-737-3166.
