CORVALLIS - Ralph Floberg, former president of the Oregon State University student body, Alumni Association, Dad's Club and OSU Foundation, has been named 1997 recipient of the Dan Poling Alumni Service Award.

The award, given annually by the OSU Alumni Association, recognizes alumni for exemplary service to the university. The award is named in honor of Dan W. Poling, an OSU alumnus who served as faculty member and campus administrator at OSU from 1937 to 1972.

Floberg was born in La Grande and enrolled at OSU (then Oregon State College) in 1936. Active in numerous campus groups, he was commissioned in the ROTC as a second lieutenant in June 1940 and graduated from OSU in 1941. He served in World War II and was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Presidential Unit Citation.

In 1947, Floberg joined Oregon's oldest insurance firm, Jewett, Barton, Leavy and Kern. He became president of the company in 1978 and chairman of the board in 1980. He retired in 1982.

Floberg was president of OSU's Alumni Association from 1951-52. He also was president of the OSU Foundation from 1973-75 and chairman of the board from 1975-77. He currently is a foundation trustee and member of the foundation nominations committee.

Active in civic affairs, Floberg was president of the Portland Downtown Kiwanis, president of the Portland Chapter of the National Football Foundation, president of the Columbia Edgewater Country Club, vice president of Multnomah Athletic Club and president of the Oregon Easter Sear Society.

He has served on advisory boards for St. Mary's Home for Boys and the Alcohol Rehabilitation Association. He was a trustee of the Boys Club of Portland and Multnomah Athletic Club. He is a lifetime member of the Salvation Army advisory board.

Floberg and his wife, Judy, are parents of four children, all OSU graduates.
