CORVALLIS - Arthur W. Sleight, a professor of chemistry at Oregon State University, has been named the 1997 recipient of the American Chemical Society Award in the Chemistry of Materials.

This prestigious award, which consists of a $5,000 honorarium and other recognition, is sponsored by E.I du Pont de Nemours and Co. It recognizes outstanding contributions to the chemistry of materials, especially those of actual or potential technological importance.

Sleight holds the Milton Harris Chair of Materials Science at OSU and directs the OSU Center for Advanced Materials Research. He is an internationally recognized expert in solid state chemistry who studies the magnetic, electrical, optical and catalytic properties of materials, and has discovered many new materials with novel and potentially useful properties.

He has done pioneering work on high temperature superconductors, optical materials and new compounds that contract, rather than expand, when they are heated over a wide range of temperatures.

This work has led to hundreds of research publications and numerous patents. Sleight also collaborates actively with the Oregon Metals Initiative to help basic research findings get translated into new commercial products for business and industry.

Sleight received his doctorate from the University of Connecticut in 1963 and has been on the OSU faculty since 1989.
