CORVALLIS - Oregon State University will honor its top faculty and staff and unofficially kick off the new academic year on Monday, Sept. 16, with its annual University Day ceremony.

The program will run from 1:15 to 3:45 p.m. in OSU's LaSells Stewart Center. It is free and open to the public.

Several awards will be presented at University Day, and talks are scheduled by OSU President Paul Risser, OSU Faculty Senate President Ken Krane, Office Personnel Association President-elect Lois Lessert, and Oregon State System of Higher Education Chancellor Joe Cox.

Numerous OSU departments and programs will have displays at the center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Award recipients include: -Lisa Ede, professor of English and director of the university's Center for Writing and Learning, the OSU Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award, which recognizes teaching, scholarship and service.

-Cheryl Glenn, an associate professor of English specializing in literacy and rhetoric, the Elizabeth P. Ritchie Distinguished Professor Award, which recognizes undergraduate teaching.

-John S. Gillis, a professor of psychology and an expert on drug addiction, the Richard M. Bressler Senior Faculty Teaching Award, which recognizes undergraduate teaching by a full professor who has been at OSU for at least 15 years.

-Dianne Hart, a senior instructor in foreign languages and literatures and coordinator of OSU's International Degree Program, the Dar Reese Excellence in Advising Award, which recognizes outstanding advising.

-Setsuko Nakajima, a senior instructor of Japanese, the OSU Faculty Teaching Excellence Award, which recognizes significant achievement in teaching or scholarship that enhances the effectiveness of instruction.

-Philip Hamm, an associate professor of botany and plant pathology at the Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center, the OSU Extended Education Faculty Achievement Award, which recognizes extended education.

-Kenneth S. Krane, professor and chair of the Department of Physics and president of the OSU Faculty Senate, the D. Curtis Mumford Faculty Service Award, which recognizes service to the OSU faculty.

-Bill Winkler, associate professor of exercise and sport science and creator of the OSU Faculty-Staff Fitness Program, the D. Curtis Mumford Faculty Service Award, which recognizes service to the OSU faculty.

-Jim Crane, senior faculty research assistant in the Department of Crop and Soil Science, the Outstanding Faculty Research Assistant Award, which recognizes achievement and innovation among research assistants.

-Dillon Sanders, a doctoral student in economics, the Herbert F. Frolander Graduate Teaching Assistant Award, which recognizes outstanding teaching by graduate students.

-Sandra Lewis, office manager in the Department of Forest Science, the OSU Staff Development Award, which recognizes supervisors who are exceptionally supportive in the training and advancement of classified and management service staff.

-Katharine Hunter-Zaworski, assistant professor of engineering, the OSU Award for Service to Persons With Disabilities, which recognizes extra effort in accommodating persons with disabilities.

-Timothy Taylor, a scientific instrument technician with the Department of Physics, the OSU Exemplary Employee Award, for Outstanding Classified Employee of the Year.

-Jim Ervin, research supervisor for greenhouse operations in the College of Agricultural Sciences, the OSU Exemplary Employee Award, for Outstanding Management Service Employee of the Year.
