CORVALLIS - Oregon State University students from McMinnville and St. Paul have earned four-year scholarships totaling more than $40,000.
Annette Buyserie, of St. Paul, and James Kirby Jr., of McMinnville, will each receive Wal-Mart Stores Competitive Edge Scholarships of more than $20,000.
Pre-engineering majors, they start their freshmen terms at OSU this fall. The awards are an effort between OSU and Wal-Mart to boost America's edge in science and technology.
Buyserie is active in academic, athletic and community groups including Future Farmers of America, track, basketball, and as a volunteer in both youth and elder care. Her parents are Douglas and Margaret Buyserie of St. Paul.
Kirby excels academically and is active in cross-country running. In high school, he operated a student-run desktop publishing business and prepared building plans for the city hall in Elgin, Ore., which is under construction. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Kirby Sr. of McMinnville.
Wal-Mart's Competitive Edge Scholarships are awarded to OSU students with top academic standing and community involvement. Funded in part by contributions from Wal-Mart vendors, the fund has grown into one of the nation's largest science and technology scholarship programs.
