CORVALLIS - More than $19,000 in scholarships for the 1996-97 academic year were earned by Oregon State University students in OSU's Science and Math Investigative Learning Experience, or SMILE program.

The program encourages Hispanic, Native American and other minority students to pursue interests in math or science and eventually attend college.

Program participants can start SMILE in elementary school and continue in the program through high school. Statistics show that SMILE students graduate from high school at a rate higher than the state average - regardless of ethnicity or income - and more than 80 percent of SMILE's seniors go on to college, almost all in Oregon.

Scholarship winners include: CHILOQUIN: Cortney Hall, sophomore in business, $2,000 Sally J. Tripp SMILE Scholarship; Gabriel Ripley, sophomore in engineering, $2,000 Sally J. Tripp SMILE Scholarship.

NYSSA: Kristy Kitamura, sophomore, liberal arts, $1,000 Sally J. Tripp SMILE Scholarship.

ONTARIO: Maria-Isabel Deira, sophomore in liberal arts, $1,000 SMILE Alumni Association Scholarship; Crystal Martinez, sophomore in pre-pharmacy, $2,500 Sally J. Tripp SMILE Scholarship; Jose Ramirez, sophomore in liberal arts; $500 Sally J. Tripp SMILE Scholarship.

SILETZ: Patricia Sweat, sophomore in science, $1,500 Sally J. Tripp SMILE Scholarship.

TOLEDO: Roszetta Wold, sophomore in engineering, $2,500 Sally J. Tripp SMILE Scholarship.

WILLAMINA: Miranda Dodd, sophomore in university exploratory studies, $2,000 Sally J. Tripp SMILE Scholarship.

WOODBURN: Nikita Kojin, sophomore in engineering, $1,000 SMILE Alumni Association Scholarship.
