CORVALLIS - An expert on the ethics of using animals in research will give a free public lecture at Oregon State University on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. in the Ag and Life Sciences building, Room 4001.

Bernard E. Rollin, a professor of philosophy and a professor of physiology and biophysics at Colorado State University, will speak on "Ethical and Social Issues in the Genetic Engineering of Animals."

It is free and open to the public.

Rollin also will participate in a discussion on Monday, Feb. 12, called "Animals and Consciousness: The Unheeded Cry" that will begin at noon in the Memorial Union Council Room.

A well-known veterinary medical ethicist, Rollin has lectured extensively on animal ethics, genetic engineering, animal pain, animal research and other issues. He has written several books on related topics, including "The Frankenstein Syndrome: Ethical and Social Issues in the Engineering of Animals."

Rollin is the director of Bioethical Planning at Colorado State.

His presentations are sponsored by OSU's Program for Ethics, Science and the Environment, the Department of Animal Sciences, and the College of Veterinary Medicine.
