CORVALLIS - Alan E. Waltar, a past president of the American Nuclear Society - as well as author, lecturer and leading advocate of the need for nuclear power in America's energy future - will speak April 23 at Oregon State University.

His lecture, which will be three days before the 10th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear incident, is titled "Chernobyl in Perspective: the Rest of the Story..."

The lecture will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Weigand Hall Room 106. It is free and open to the public.

Waltar is the author of a new book titled "America the Powerless: Facing Our Nuclear Energy Dilemma." In it he explores some of the most common public fears about nuclear technology, waste disposal, nuclear proliferation, radiation risks, environmental concerns and other topics.

OSU is an active participant in developing the next generation of "passively-safe" nuclear reactors that many experts feel will herald the future of nuclear power development around the world.

A test model of safety systems on the new Westinghouse AP600 reactor model has been completed at the OSU Radiation Center, with a $6 million construction and research budget. Studies are already under way.
